Trotros have no fixed timetable and often no destination board. Here's everything a first-timer needs to ride with confidence, and stay safe doing it.

The basics
- Most trotro routes in Accra are 35 km or less.
- A trotro runs between a starting point and a final destination, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way.
- Many moving trotros have no destination board, you go by what the mate shouts.

Know where it's going
- Listen to the mate (conductor) shouting the destination.
- Not sure? Turn your palm toward the approaching trotro, the mate will shout or signal where it's headed.
- When in doubt, signal the mate rather than guess.

Boarding safely
- Get to the roadside a few minutes early and wait in a safe spot, away from traffic.
- When it stops, let passengers off first, then hold the door or a bar as you climb in.
- Have your fare ready if you can, and keep your bags close to you.

Once you're inside
- Sit if there's a seat; if not, move toward the back so others can board.
- Standing? Hold a pole or handle so you don't fall when the trotro moves.
- Keep the entrance clear so passengers can get on and off easily.

Paying your fare
- The mate collects fares while moving, so pass your money forward when asked.
- Fares are set by the route; small notes and coins make change easier.
- If unsure of the fare, ask the mate or a fellow passenger before you get on.

Be a good passenger
- If you're in a convenient seat and an elderly person, a pregnant woman, or someone with a disability boards, it's polite to offer your seat.
- Follow the driver's and mate's instructions, and hold on while the trotro is moving.
- To get down, call "bus stop!" clearly a little before your stop so the mate can signal the driver.
- Keep the aisle and door clear so others can board and alight quickly.
