Privacy Policy
TroTro Guide is a free, community project that helps people find their way around Accra by trotro. We built it to be genuinely useful without being nosy. This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, what we don’t, and the choices you have.
The short version
- No accounts, no login, no sign-up. You can just use it.
- Your location stays on your phone. We only ever receive a rough, blurred area — never your exact GPS.
- We don’t run ads, we don’t use advertising trackers, and we never sell or rent your data.
- Most of what the app remembers (your searches, saved trips) lives only on your device.
1. Information stored only on your device
To work offline, the app keeps things like your recent searches, saved trips, and preferences in your browser’s local storage on your phone. This data stays on your device — it is not sent to us — and you can clear it any time from your browser settings.
2. Location
If you allow it, the app uses your location on your device to find the nearest stop and the right trotro. When a lookup needs the server, the app first blurs your position into a coarse area (about a 170-metre cell) and sends only that — never your precise coordinates. We do not store your location on our servers, and we do not track your movements. If you deny location access, the app still works; it just asks where you’re starting from.
3. “Missing route” reports you send us
If you use “Help us map it” to report an area we don’t cover yet, we receive the destination and the optional note you type — nothing else, and never your location. We use these reports to decide where to map next. If you’d like a report removed, contact us (below).
4. Basic technical logs
Like most websites, our servers keep limited, short-lived technical logs (for example, error counts and coarse request information) to keep the service running and secure. These are not used to identify you and never contain your precise location.
5. Donations
Donations are processed by Paystack. Your payment details (card or Mobile Money) are entered on Paystack’s secure page — we never see or store them. Paystack’s handling of your payment information is governed by their own privacy policy.
6. Map data
Route and map data shown in the beta app is © OpenStreetMap contributors, used under the Open Database License (ODbL).
7. Third-party services
We rely on a few trusted services to run TroTro Guide:
- Hosting: the app and this site are served over a content-delivery network.
- Paystack: processes donations.
- OpenStreetMap: the source of the beta map data.
- A spreadsheet service: receives the “missing route” reports you choose to send.
8. Cookies
We don’t use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. The app uses your browser’s local storage only to function (for example, to work offline and remember your recent searches).
9. Children
TroTro Guide is a general-audience transport tool and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
10. Your choices
- Deny or revoke location access in your browser at any time.
- Clear the app’s on-device data from your browser settings.
- Ask us to remove a “missing route” report you sent.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app grows. We’ll change the “last updated” date above when we do.
